Dreamcatcher Project

The Dreamcatchers Project is for people with the label learning disability and/or autism.

Our aim is to support people to have a "good life".

We aim to do this by

  • Working with peoples strengths and abilities using person centred planning
  • Supporting families in planning for their son's or daughter's future
  • Helping people to achieve their goals and aspiration
  • Supporting people's friendships and helping them make new friends
  • Supporting people use ordinary places and facilities within the community
  • Supporting ordinary community members to make a difference in the lives of people with the label of learning disability and/or autism

Individual person centred support

Our project workers work alongside the individual and their families and supporters. We aim to get to know the persons interests and strengths and to look at ways we can find opportunities for activity and connections in the community.

This can lead to many things depending on the goals and aspirations of the individual. For some, big things like getting their own home, becoming a full time student, getting a job and for others smaller things like joining a drama group at the Rep, going skateboarding. And very exciting things like scuba diving and skateboarding! From leisure and sport to volunteering and learning, many things are possible.

Link to community connecting outreach

As well as finding activity the aim of the project worker is to help the person find social connections and to increase their social network or circle of friends/support.

Friendship

This project links together two people who would like to find new friendships. A volunteer provides a supporting link between two project participants and assists them in the early stages of the friendship. The Friendship project is supported by a DVD learning resource addressing important elements of making and keeping friends.

Befriending

Befriending offers people who are isolated a reliable supportive friendship and the chance to get out more and share activities that both parties enjoy. Befriending often provides people with a new direction in life, opens up a range of activities and leads to increased self-esteem and self confidence.
