Circles Around Dundee

The History of Circles Around Dundee

About CirclesIn 1998, “Breaking New Ground” was published by a Working Group of users, carers and professionals who’d looked at short breaks (respite) in Dundee. It showed how hard it is for people with learning disabilities to
  • Have opportunities outside services to meet others
  • Develop friendships and new relationships
  • Do ordinary things in the community
  • Go out at weekends and in the evening

All things that other people generally take for granted, and while the Inclusion Group was helping children and young people to be included more in their communities, there was nothing to support adults and their families in this area. So, a couple of the “Breaking New Ground” team members started to talk to people in projects like Community Connections in Edinburgh and the Bristol Circles Network and to gather support locally for the idea of a ‘circles of support’ project.

During 1999, a Steering Group started meeting with representatives from Advocating Together, the Inclusion Group, Princess Royal Trust Carers Centre, PAMIS, ENABLE, and supported by planning staff in the Social Work and Economic Development Departments of the Council. In May 2000, with over 60 local people present, this consortium launched a new organisation called Circles Around Dundee. The new organisation had its own constitution and people voted in the voluntary management committee of eleven, including people with experience of using services and family carers.

During 2000 the management committee received enquiries from a range of sources – care managers, Strathmartine hospital staff, individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism and carers looking for a service. Therefore it was not difficult to identify the need for a circles project. From here we went on to successfully apply for a Lottery grant early in 2001 and the Dreamcatchers project was born.
